Whittier was the childhood home of Richard
Nixon.
“In Whittier, we had only one Black family that I
know about. The children went to my high school
(Whittier High, the same high school that Nixon
attended), and were older than I was, but I knew one
of the sons and spent some time around him. A
daughter was the age of my older sisters and I do
know that she was a cheerleader, so she was ‘allowed’
to do that. But I also know that the yearbook the year
that she was a cheerleader, really lightened the
pictures of her so that she wasn’t quite so dark. I
THINK that year would be about 1962-1963 or so. Her
brother, who I knew, was popular with students and
was a track star. I later worked with a woman who
lived near the family and who also came from the
south and I know she wasn’t too happy about them
moving into the neighborhood BUT she did say they
turned out to be a nice family. Whittier DID have
Latinos, and I grew up with them, went all through
school with them, and had several as friends. The
leader of my Campfire Girl’s troop was Latina, the
mother of one of the members, and one of the
cheerleaders when I was a Senior in high school (1969)
was Latina. I only remember one Asian in my high
school and he was of Japanese ancestry. I don’t
remember any Native Americans in Whittier, though I
did date one for a time from a nearby town, which did
not make my father very happy. He didn’t stop me
from doing it though. He also was not very happy
when I dated a Jewish boy from a nearby town, but he
didn’t stop that either. I only remember one Jewish
family while I was in high school, and the girl was a
friend. There were probably a few more families than
just hers though.”
