In 2003, a Detroit resident and black history expert reported that he refuses to go to the Upper Peninsula because it is full of KKK towns. There a few black people living in the area, but not many.
4/2015Email from a longtime resident: “I’m mixed and have lived in the Keweenaw Peninsula of the UP, there are little to no black people but any racism I’ve ever experienced was a very old timey “we’re so out of touch we still using the word colored” type of racism.
The UP is extremely insular and full of Scandinavian immigrants, I’m not sure if they would’ve had sundown towns because I don’t think black people have ever lived there to begin with. (course that could be because they were not welcome).”
2/2012 email from a longtime resident: “I grew up in the UP and a great portion of the population has rascist tendancies. You will almost never see a black (or Asian, or Arabic, etc) person outside of one of the larger college towns (Houghton/Hancock, Marquette, etc). People freely use racial slurs and are not welcoming of anyone who is not white.
This mentality is slowly (very, very slowly) changing as the older generations die and the younger, more culturally aware, people are coming into power. Unfortunately some of those younger people have inheirited their parents’ hateful attitude. “
