James W. Loewen (1942-2021)

We mourn the loss of our friend and colleague and remain committed to the work he began.

The foundation was 96 telephone poles, each topped by an inverted aluminum pie pan to keep out termites.

Loewen Built a Post-and-Beam House in Mississippi

“Work, love, build a house, and die. But build a house.” — American poet Donald Hall

After the buyers moved in, the house got featured in an article in the Jackson daily newspaper.
Three rather well-known books about home construction influenced Loewen’s house, by Frank Lloyd Wright, Rex Roberts, and Ken Kern. After he finished it, Loewen wrote a paper, “Facts about the House,” for the new owners and also for his own memory. It details the unusual ideas that even extend to how and why the doors are built as they are and open the way they do.
