Comments
Pitkin is too small to be included in the census, but
the district of Vernon Parish in which it is located has
only 9 black residents out of 2,947 total.
“The sign saying ‘Nigger, don’t let the sun come
down on you in this town’ has recently been
dismantled.”
“It was said by many (black folk and white folk) that
Pitkin, Louisiana was famous for its postings of
‘Niggers get out by nightime’. It was said that the
signs came down around 1989, but I cannot be for
certain. I drove into Pitkin once while stationed there
and did not remember seeing a sign.”
