Avondale Estates is a suburb of Atlanta that is incorporated as a city with its own police and fire, a city council and hired city manager.
Former Teacher in Avondale Estates:
%u201CI taught in the school the past two years. The town is 96 % white and was famous in Jim Crow days for never allowing “For Sale” signs (that way they could never be forced to sell to blacks.) The school is right on the city borders, but is disowned by the town.
Avondale High is 99% black. The outlying neighborhoods of Scottsdale and Midway fill the school. The 1% are Bosnian Refugees/Hispanic. The city of Avondale Estates pay tuition to send their kids down the road to Decatur High (1/3rd black/2/3rd white) or the numerous private schools nearby. What was left of the white populace left a decade ago when the County removed the Performing Arts Magnet program. It is absolute Seperate but unequal, Plessy not Brown.
The resources are meager but the real kick is when a black student walks forty yards north up Clarendon Drive, the city cops will be called and will roust the teenager. Now some of these kids look and act the part of thug ala ghetto rap stuff, but the kneejerk police reaction is amazing. And the kids know it; racism is alive and well in their world, a built in excuse to not strive in school. The thing is, the city elected the first GLBT rep (out at least) and votes Democratic in elections regularly. They brought the Bosnians in a do gooder outreach effort. But the old racists and the liberal yuppies cannot deal with the race issues in and around their community, gated figuratively.%u201D
