Comments

University Park “used to have an ordinance that buyers
into the area were required to sign. It forbade Jews as
well as blacks. It was pretty well subverted with
regard to Jews by the 1950s.” The first black resident
was John Hope Franklin, who moved to University Park
in 1966 or 67. The University of Maryland
administration attempted to prevent the Washington
Metro from having a stop on campus because it would
attract “urban” (black) presence.
