As for the sign, it was there when my father moved to the town in the mid sixties. — Tipp City Native (to 1995)
Several people have heard rumors about Tipp City. One person claims, “I heard over the years that Tipp City Ohio had a sundown sign of the rude variety well into the 1970’s.” Another writes, “I still don’t think they have any one living there now who is not white!” A police officer from a nearby town reports that there are rumors that blacks can’t buy property even today.
A resident testifies: “I have lived in the town (15 miles north of Dayton, pop. 5000) for 35 years. Tipp has had an entirely white population until the late 1990’s (I believe it wasn’t until 2001 that the first black student graduated from the high school, a friend of my daughter’s). I have, on occasion heard of an ‘underground’ KKK affiliation, but have never experienced any outright reference to racism. My black friend hails from Troy, (an integrated town of about 15,000) 5 miles to the north. He personally recalls seeing the sign at the edge of town in the late ’60s warning ‘Negros’ to be out of town by 6:00 pm.”
