I am from a small town of 3,500 in Stilwell,
Oklahoma. I could not wait to get out of that place… If
you don’t mind living in a place where the Bible Belt
rules the town and the word nigger is as common as
air is, then what a place to be! I remember while going
to school there was a black family who moved to town.
It’s as if they had never seen African Americans and
I’m certain they even wondered if they had tails. I just
couldn’t get over the ignorance level. For the longest
time there was a sign outside of town the read ‘don’t
let the sun set on your black ass’.”
