Email from a longtime resident: “my recollection of my life in Spooner up until 1959 was that it was, indeed, a daily siren that signaled five or six PM and that there seems to be no particular reason for that signal.
That is, there were no major factories that closed at that time of the day, and most of the stores in town closed at different times. That is, not all stores closed at exactly the same time…”
