A local librarian grew up in Nitro, but didn’t believe there was anyone she knew of that could answer my questions. “There’s no good reason it’s this way,” she kept repeating. She did mention, however, that “Nitro’s always been white and Dunbar’s always been black.” My investigation into Dunbar proved inconclusive.
