A local librarian told me that I “hit the nail on the head.”She explained that the town does have Indian doctors, but for whatever reason there are very few black families. Her thought was that the lack of minority population might stem from New Martinsville’s location; there aren’t any cities nearby and therefore nothing to draw people to the town. “We knew everybody in town, but it’s not that way anymore.”
