Maryville
For a town of color officially “destroyed” by its state, there’s Maryville, SC, across the Ashley River from Charleston. Its municipal charter was revoked in the 1930’s after the town’s black policeman arrested unruly white youths. The community endured but never regained its rights as a town, and now is threatened by rising values of riverfront real estate
