IN 1963 I WAS A SENIOR AT MARYSVILLE HIGH SCHOOL. WE HAD A COUNTY GOVERNMENT DAY AND I WAS ELECTED BY MY CLASS TO BE MAYOR. WE SPENT THE DAY AT THE COUNTY COURT HOUSE AND WAS ALLOWED ACCESS TO OLD FILES AND DOCUMENTS. I FOUND A LAW ON THE BOOKS THAT HAD NEVER BEEN REMOVED ABOUT IF A AFRO-AMERICAN WAS FOUND IN THE CITY LIMITS AFTER SUNDOWN HE WAS SUBJECT TO ARREST. THEY ALSO STATED THAT ANY NEGRO WOULD BE ESCORTED TO THE CITY LIMITS AND WOULD NOT BE ALLOWED BACK………..SUBJECT TO ARREST.
I GREW UP IN MARYSVILLE AND I NEVER WENT TO SCHOOL WITH ANY BLACK STUDENTS……….I HAVE NOT RETURNED IN YEARS BUT I DO NOT RECALL ANY BLACK FAMILIES LIVING THERE NOW.
