A former resident recalls that in the late 1950s, a black janitor and his family moved into an apartment. Whites stoned the house; they left. She remembers the daughter went to school briefly. Her [the resident’s] parents told her the story. The town was otherwise all-white.

However, by 2010, Lakewood, OH joined The Inclusive Communities Partnership of the National League of Cities. This partnership serves to promote equality and bring attention to race relations by raising awareness on the importance of inclusive communities.
