Email 1/2008:
I believe that Holt and Kearney Missouri are sun down towns. I grew up in and around both towns as did my parents. My mom reported that she remembers the signs when she was little in Holt. I graduated from Kearney High School in 1989 and we had no students of any color other than white. In approximately 1992 while working at a restaurant in Kearney a police officer came in to ask which direction I headed home(after midnight and I was working alone). When I inquired as to why he was asking, he stated that there was a large KKK rally being held outside of town where machine guns were being shot, he was going to escort me home to make sure I got there safely. I also heard rumors that any black person that moved into Kearney was subjected to violence towards their home and vehicles.
