“We were working late, and” someone said “You gotta be outta town by 6,” referring to the blacks on the crew, from Carlyle. I wasn’t quite clear as to whether my informant thought the foreman was kidding. Clearly, he said it referred to a rule, but he didn’t think it was going to be enforced that evening, it was more like a quip by then.
