Comments

In 1894 Durango’s “colored club” endorsed a
candidate for city attorney. However, almost all
African Americans had left the town by 1900.
According to Duane A. Smith in his book “A Tale of
Two Towns” (1997), “the depression, better
opportunities elsewhere, and a desire to associate with
more of their own race apparently caused almost all of
them to leave Durango by 1900.” More information is
needed.
