Arkansas History Listserv parts of a discussion regarding the expulsion of African Americans from the Crawford County
town of Catcher in 1923:
Among the buried are Civil War soldiers. After the people were literally run out with the clothes on their backs—many
moved to nearby Ft. Smith and a few others moved into Van Buren.
The woman who was murdered was shot in the back of the head, but the local “spin” was that she identified the two men as her assailants. It is not known how many people have survived shots to the back of the head to have identified anyone, however two men who claimed innocence till
their death were electrocuted for this murder.
The cemetery, St. Paul’s cemetery lies abandoned and destroyed—many
headstones were smashed and locals say that some bodies were dug up and
dismembered. The cemetery was behind a church, St. Paul’s Cemetery and =
it was also destroyed by the local mob.
