I thought you might be interested in hearing about the town where I grew up — I don’t know that it’s ever had any laws on the books against black residents, but I thought I would share with you what I saw there (I’m white, BTW) as well as having you take a look at the following article about Slinger, WI: http://www.gmtoday.com/news/local_stories/2005/June_05/06222005_10.asp
Slinger has between 3,000 and 4,000 residents. I grew up there and went to high school there, and the racism I witnessed was astounding. One of my first experiences as a freshman in 1996 was almost walking right into the middle of a fight between a group of white guys and the only black guy in the school. As I rounded the corner right into their fight, one of the white students screamed at this black student (who was one of the nicest people at that wretched school) “Why don’t you fucking go back to where you came from?” About a year later, he left the school and nobody knew where he’d gone. Besides this student, there was only one other black student at Slinger High School until several years later.
