A former Batesville resident doesn’t recall an ordinance or law in Batesville prohibiting blacks, however, townspeople are still knowledge about behaviors. One man who grew up next to a lumber yard and would visit the black truckers who were delivering lumber. He said they always rushed to get unloaded and out of town before dark.
She also remembers as a girl hearing about a prominent family in town who employed black maids, chefs, chauffeurs for business functions. Those employees were told to never be on the streets at night.
Another person told her about a black maid/housekeeper who worked for that same family on a more permanent basis. She would only go outdoors to attend the earliest Mass at the local Catholic church. It was dark at that time of the morning a good part of the year.
