The husband of a former longtime resident said, in an email, “My wife grew up in South Milwaukee and she remembers distinctly that it was a sundown town until the late 1960’s. She believes that there was an ordinance, but she does not remember there being a sign. Blacks were only allowed to work the first shift at the Bucyrus-Erie factory in town and had to be out of town by dusk.”
Another informant also reported, by email, “According to my dad, while he doesn’t remember signs being posted a la Hawthorne, there were laws preventing the sale of houses to black individuals in SM until at least the 1970s.”
