While few black reside in Punxsutawney, a resident of the town who studied local history for years does not remember any overt “sundown town” tradition. The resident reported, “I have read and studied the older newspapers from the early 1880s and have not come across any mention or expressed feelings about this problem here, or in any of the many small villages and mining towns formed around Punxsutawney. There is written record from the newspapers of many “black” or “colored” folk who have lived here, with some prominent businesses.” But he admits, there might be a tradition that never saw print, and the KKK was active in this area of Western Pennsylvania in the 1920s.
